Unclaimed Money is on the Polar Express to You

The State Treasury’s Unclaimed Money team is issuing the second batch of Unclaimed Money checks to roughly 6,000 Mississippians just in time for Christmas! These checks are part of the State Treasury’s proactive plan to return outstanding unclaimed money to Mississippi residents. By Christmas, the Treasury will have returned roughly 10,000 checks for a grand total of $4 million!

This year alone, we have returned a record-breaking $40 million back to Mississippians through the Unclaimed Money department. This is just a little chunk of the almost $120 million in unclaimed money that my team has returned since I took office.

Roughly one in 10 Mississippians have unclaimed money! If you have not yet looked for unclaimed money in your name, your business’ name, or the name of an organization you’re involved with, search now. To begin, visit treasury.ms.gov/search.

While the time we spend making memories with loved ones is often the most meaningful part of the Christmas season, I know the pressure parents (in particular) feel to fill the tree skirt with ever-more expensive presents. I hope this infusion of $4 million into the state’s economy proves helpful to recipients, looking for a little extra spending cash during the most joyfully expensive time of year.

One additional holiday note (or perhaps suggestion of how to spend any unclaimed money that’s been returned to you): The State Treasury offers education savings plans that can make extremely meaningful gifts for the young people in our lives. Consider contributing to a MACS account, which is a tax-advantaged account that can be used for primary/secondary school tuition, books, laptops, and more. Or think about an MPACT plan, which locks in today’s tuition rates, allowing parents and grandparents to prepay a loved one’s college tuition. Finally, let me take a moment to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas. May you find time this season to open your heart, spend time with loved ones, and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Merry Christmas.
