A Big Week at the Treasury

Last week was a big one at the Treasury. Here’s what happened…

First, we returned Unclaimed Property to Make-a-Wish Mississippi. More than 160 Mississippi kids are waiting for their wishes to be granted. I’m grateful we could play at least a small role in making these wishes come true by finding and returning money to this exceptional organization from unclaimed property.

Then, we joined forces with the state legislature to improve college savings investment returns. The Treasury’s foundational responsibility is to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars – and that’s exactly what we did in passing SB2881, the College Savings Plans of Mississippi Investment Policy. Thank you to Senator Josh Harkins, Representative Trey Lamar, and Governor Tate Reeves for helping us get this legislation across the finish line!

Finally, we returned $125 million in unclaimed property to the Mississippi Department of Health. Returning unclaimed property is one way the Treasury can give Mississippi an economic boost without adding to the financial burden hardworking taxpayers already carry. What was the reaction of State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs? “The funds couldn’t come at a better time.” Glad we could help. You too may have unclaimed property.
